At S.O.A.P, we believe art is survival, creative mischief is sacred, and every team member is a creative force.
Whether you're designing a newsletter, pouring a drink, or lifting up a new artist—you’re part of the story.

We value people for who they are, not just what they do. We honor fluidity, complexity, and lived experience. Identity isn't just a demographic—it’s a lens, a rhythm, a gift.

We are a small, collaborative team that moves through chaos with care. We center relational work over transactional habits, and we're committed to anti-oppressive practices that are felt—not just framed.

If you’re curious, community-rooted, and ready to create with love and ferocity—join the suds.

Seattle Open Arts Place (SOAP) is seeking a collaborative, systems-minded, and community-rooted Technical Director to steward our tech infrastructure, support artists, and co-lead production readiness in our creative sanctuary. We’re a small but mighty arts incubator based in Seattle’s Central District, committed to serving artists who often fall through the cracks.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in collaborative, problem-solving environments, is self-starting, and wants to grow with a grassroots organization on the rise.

    🛠️ What You'll Do:

    • Oversee and maintain SOAP’s lighting, sound, projection, and streaming systems

    • Lead tech orientations and exit walkthroughs for rentals and co-productions

    • Keep our stage, rep plot, tech booth, and storage areas clean, functional, and future-ready

    • Create and maintain documentation for all technical systems (routing trees, rep plots, etc.)

    • Support co-productions and internal events as a board op or tech consultant as needed

    • Build a roster of board ops, stream engineers, and learning artists

    • Collaborate on slides and stream overlays with the Marketing Director

    • Participate in planning tech budgets and long-term infrastructure growth

    • Be on call for tech support during performances and rentals if needed

    • Train staff and support SOAP’s dream of building a technical pipeline for learning artists

    • Support bar shifts at least 3x/month (SOAP covers MAST permit)

    • Report directly to the Executive Artistic Director

🔧 You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

    • Have experience in live tech for theater, events, or multimedia installations

    • Have experience with programming and maintaining lightboards

    • Are deeply organized and calm under pressure

    • Enjoy mentoring artists and building sustainable systems

    • Can communicate clearly across artistic, technical, and administrative languages

    • Value equity, accessibility, and transparency

    • Are available for evenings and weekends (hybrid role with high in-person requirements)

    • Are you familiar with platforms like OBS, Vimeo, Google Drive, Trello, and CAD programs—or excited to find resources and learn?

    ⚡ Why Now?

After several years of transition and transformation, SOAP is ready to invest in consistent, accessible, and innovative tech leadership. As we grow our co-production calendar and deepen our commitment to emerging artists and experimental work, this role is critical in shaping the heartbeat (and literal sound and light) of our shows. We’re looking for someone ready to build something lasting.
